Windows Phone Tips & Tricks Part II: Get mobile with Office

Posted June 14, 2011

Office

Last week on Twitter we asked if you love to use Office on your Windows Phone. Someone responded saying that they’ve used their phone to write three essays from scratch and edit their whole dissertation – great skills @Fanappy! Now you can be a mobile Office whizz too with our top tips and tricks…

The Basics

Never used Office on your Windows Phone before? You don’t know what you’re missing. Tap the Office hub tile to get going.

With mobile Office you can review, edit and add comments or notes to all manner of files – from Word documents, to Excel spreadsheets, to PowerPoint presentations – wherever you lay your hat. When you’re finished, ping your file to a colleague by email or save it to SharePoint direct from your phone. You can even send it to your Windows Live SkyDrive account.

With OneNote Mobile you can also write notes about anything, anywhere. Use OneNote on any device, sync with Windows Live SkyDrive and hey presto – you can access your notes at the touch of a button, wherever you are. Not familiar with OneNote? Why not take a look at these 40 great TripBooks, created by bloggers from around the world to help you plan your next holiday – all viewable, of course, on your Windows Phone.

Office tips and tricks

Now you’re familiar with the app, here are some great tips to help improve your mobile Office skills:

  • Spring clean your inbox – press on the far left of an email you want to delete. A check box will appear. Press the check box next to each email you want to delete and then press delete.
  • Quick-fix punctuation – press and hold the full-stop key to bring up some of the most common punctuation options.
  • Not on .com? – Press and hold the .com key to bring up the other common email extensions like .org and .net.
  • Where’s your accent from? – Press and hold any letter that can include an accent and all of the possible accents for that letter will appear.
  • Say what you mean – press and hold the start key to initiate speech recognition; say ‘open Office’ or ‘start Office’‚ and hey presto – Office automatically launches. Sweet.

Great these keyboard shortcuts are great for punctuation and extra non .com extensions.
What about the addition of the relevant academic extension for the country you are in e.g. in Britain it would be .ac.uk
Is there a similiar extension for government departments e.g. .gov.uk or .gov.irl for Ireland?
