The ultimate #groove playlist

Posted June 4, 2010

While digging through your #groove playlists from last week, we noticed that certain songs kept popping up. It seems that there are some songs that are seen as the ultimate summer choons, no matter what your taste is.

As a result, we compiled your playlists together and ran it through our uber expensive, and highly complex analytics system (a print out and a pencil) to determine what the most popular songs were. As a result, we believe we’ve created the ultimate summer playlist based on your suggestions.

So, as a public service, we’re releasing this beast out into the wild with some of our thoughts on each track.

We call it ‘my kind of playlist

1. You Got the Love – The Source & Candi Station/Florence + The Machine/The XX

Hands down the most popular track. We guess this track’s popularity has been reignited due to the cracking cover from messrs Florence, Machine et al. However, the original is still a cracking tune and reminds us why the 90s were such a great decade for music. This is definitely a tune to play loudly towards the end of a hot summer night.

2. Teardrop – Massive Attack/Newton Faulkner

Something we noticed from the lists is that chilled out music is quite popular. Teardrop is one of the classic chill out tracks from the kings of chill out, Massive Attack. Since then it’s been given the acoustic treatment by everybody’s favourite dreadlock’d ginger, Newton Faulkner. Either is perfect for kicking back on the beach and feeling the sand between your toes.

3. Mr Brightside – The Killers/Paul Anka

Moving down the list, we have our first proper rock entrant. It’s also the first attempt at non-chillout. Mr Brightside became an instant classic when The Killers released it in 2003. It’s a song that is almost guaranteed to get people bopping and singing along. However, for a more sophisticated shindig, give Paul Anka’s swingified version a spin whilst sipping your martini and discussing whether to buy a jag or a merc.

4. Don’t Step Believin’ – Journey/Glee

No ultimate playlist is complete without an anthem. While it’s no Eye of the Tiger, Don’t Stop Believin’ gets people singing. Loud. Proud. Slightly out of tune. Come on, everyone join in… ‘Don’t Stop… Believin’… Hold on to that FEELING!’ A classic only made better by the over-autotuned Glee version.

5. Cafe Del Mar – Energy 52

If ever a song screamed ‘Ibiza!’, this is it. A true trance classic that makes me want to pull out my retired, dusty glowsticks and jump on a Spain-bound plane.

6. Unfinished Symphony – Massive Attack

The second Massive Attack track to make it into our ultimate #groove list, and with good reason. Their tracks are chilled to the point that there’s icicles forming and provide the perfect backdrop to relaxing in the sun.

7. Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough – Michael Jackson

However, there is one man that should, nay, MUST be included here. What summer listening schedule would be complete without the late, great King of Pop. While he may have come under fire in the past ten years, there is no disputing that this man made some of the best pop tracks. Ever. In the universe.

So now we release our playlist, chosen by you, into the wild.

Did we get it right? Let us know!
