Update 11th June: And the winner is…
Congratulations to #mkop-twitclan (entered by @barneyc on Twitter) who are the winners of our #play gaming competition.
#mkop-twitclan claimed the cinema gaming day with 746 separate Twitter users sending messages of support. There were over 1,200 tweets in total, and so #mkop-twitclan took the prize with an overall majority of votes.
Barney and 15 other #mkop-twitclan members will experience a night of screen gaming experience in London, playing their favourite games in super-massive cinema screen glory. We’ll be providing all the food, drink and tech – leaving them to focus on the gaming fun.
A big thank you to the other clans and the massive effort put in by everyone who took part in ‘my kind of competition: #play’.
Before you go – do you have suggestions or requests for the gaming section of the mykindofphone blog? Send a message to @mykindofphone on Twitter and we’ll follow up your ideas.
Original post
Gaming, as you know, is brilliant.
Online multiplayer is better, whether you’re playing at home or on your phone.
Multi-player with mates in the same room is even better still.
So… how amazing would it be to play in a private cinema on the big screen with your friends?
When we heard about cinema gaming, we loved the idea so much we’ve decided to create the experience for you.
If you can build the biggest and best gamer clan on Twitter, you and 15 friends could win a big screen gaming experience in London. You’ll get a private cinema with games consoles and the game of your choice ready to play, food, drinks, and we’ll screen one of the best gamer films of all time.
How to enter
- Create a unique clan name using the format #mkop-[your group name] (for example #mkop-ninjas or #mkop-dragons).
- Leave a comment on this page with three pieces of info:
- your clan name (in the format explained above),
- your Twitter name, and
- a message saying why you want to win (perhaps share a story about why you’re the best, reel off a list of your favourite games or how you’ve always wanted to play on the big screen). Entries are subject to approval, so keep your clan name suitable for all ages!
- Get your friends to tweet! Every person user who includes your clan name and the competition link (http://bit.ly/playcomp) in a tweet counts as a vote for your entry.
Example tweet: “#mkop-ninjas for the win! top of the leaderboard every time http://bit.ly/playcomp”
We’ll count up the total and the gaming clan with the most tweets at the end of the week wins. Closing date for voting is 2pm 11th June 2010 so get going straight away.
Most popular clans up to 12:00 pm 10th June
| Clan | Total |

| #mkop-twitclan | 71 |
| #mkop-inc | 10 |

What happens next
Whilst you’re posting your entry and building support, we’ll be keeping count and posting a league table of tweets every day at midday. Only one tweet per Twitter profile will count towards your total, and votes must come from a valid profile registered on June 1st or before. Messages posted before 2pm on 11th June 2010 will be counted.
Good luck and get creative with your clan name!

Why I want to win: Because ninja clans deserve to win. Fact.
#mkop-twitclan from @barneyc
The first person shooter space is dominated by 12 – 16 years old’s who quite frankly are way to quick, way to agile and way to able for an old boy like myself to compete against effectively.
So we started #twitclan a few months back.
I think the youngest is mid-twenties and me, well let’s just say I’m pushing the wrong end of my thirties. Together we hold our own in Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox Live through teamwork and communication – rather than the usual trashtalk.
Are we great – in real life yup. Online, not so much. But we have fun.
The clan has a core of about 6 members with a few floaters and weekly enquiry from our fellow Twitter contacts. All are welcome, all are needed.
This week was our first foray into Red Dead Redemption on the Xbox 360 and whilst still and first person shooter, the gameplay and scope is far removed from MW2 as one could get in the genre. Saying that, I reckon there were a fair few old school Rockstar fans as as a posse we more held out own for a first outing.
This competition offers up a unique opportunity for the core clan though. We all know each other online through various social networks (Twitter being the most obvious hence the clan name) but with a couple of exceptions NONE of us has ever actually met.
So not only would the MyKindofPhone competition be an awesome gaming experience but would become the inaugral annual meet for the #twitclan. How cool would that be?

Why I want to win: Because it would boost my, and that of my fellow clan members’, self esteem immeasurably and allow us to emerge from our sheltered lives with our heads held high, and say that we enjoyed the best gaming experience on offer. This increase in self-esteem would have beneficial knock-on effects too numerous to state here.

I’ve just read what was written above and Barney has summed us up perfectly; a group of adult gamers who got together to have fun with like minded people. We vary in skill levels across the clan but even the less gifted amongst us have been known to have incredible games, leaving the others amazed (ok, I admit, I’m the rubbish one).
We started off playing Modern Warfare 2, had a brief affair with Left 4 Dead 2 and now we’re starting on Red Dead Redemption. I had held off playing multiplayer until the other guys were there and my patience was rewarded, we had a great session and it was some of the most fun I’ve had online in a long time.
As Barney says above, I’d love us to won this prize so we can hold a meet up. Not all of us have met face to face and this would be a great opportunity to do that, have some drinks together, an amazing gaming experience and finally get the chance to hang out with a fantastic bunch of mates.
Hullo,

@incgamingclan
INC Gaming Clan is a long running organisation, we’ve been around in total for around 8 years, although almost 3 of that under present management and in present form. We exist to bring some maturity to CounterStrike: Source so that our members can play without the stereotypical css players ruining our fun. We believe in fair play, maturity and a sense of family amongst our clan and regular visitors.
Our members ages range from 8years old (play with parents supervision) to 45years old, with just shy of 90 members. Our average member age is around 28years old. We are mostly based in the UK but do have substantial pockets of members spread around Europe too. We’re fortunate enough to run some of the UK’s most popular CSS servers and see constant high numbers playing on them.
Although as a clan we support only CSS, we have large numbers of members that play most of the multi-player steam games available as well as pretty much every other multi-player game out there. If there’s a game, there’s usually one of our members at least that plays it!
We try to create bonds with other clans and communities that share some of our morales, interests and common goals and we try to support them wherever we can.
We would really appreciate this chance to have a gathering that would allow a number of our members to have fun in a different setting and in a much more personal way.

We want to win as we are a gaming community, made by the gamer and for the gamer. We want this win to show off our site which is full of hardcore gamers and a few noobs, have a laugh together and experience a day never to forget! Not to mention munching on the free food

Team of Boisterous Adult Gamers (TBAG) have been around for about a year and we area fun gaming clan based on xbox live, we have a diverse range of ages in the clan butvthe leaders are in their 20’s and 30’s. For us it’s about having fun and enjoying ourselves but if we win a few matches along the way then that’s a bonus! We mostly play Bad company 2, modern warfare 2 and red dead redemption at the moment.
See you on XBL!!
The reason TBAG want to win is so that wecan all finally meet up and a good time watching a movie and playing games, basically what we do at home but instead all in the same room with the best gaming buddies ever!
Great competition so far. Looks like this one is going to the wire!
I’d just like to say good luck to everyone that has entered. Sadly we can’t all win, but whoever does, make sure you/we have the time of our lives.

@WazHaz
Me and my friends are true gamers! DOTA is in our blood.
WOW!
I’ve come over all emotional. In my best awards ceremony fashion…
A heartfelt thanks to the whole #twitclan crew (all 8 or so of us) for their efforts and especially @davidcarrington for his last minute mammoth drive.
A massive thanks to Microsoft for the compo – plenty of bloggers amongst us so we’ll be sure to make some more noise.
Finally I’d like to thank my good wife for despite being a bit of an Xbox Widow putting up with me putting in the hours.
Muchly looking forward to it.
I’ve jotted down some details of how the competition went for us over at http://www.exponere.com/2010/setting-out-for-a-win-the-twitclan-way/
