Review: Karaoke kaos with Qype and my kind of phone

Posted June 3, 2010

qype

Last night, a crowd of over 40 people descended last night on Lucky Voice in Islington, London, to join in with the first ‘my kind of phone’ event in partnership with Qype.

The karaoke took centre stage and there were some true classics belted out, including a mean ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, a rocking ‘Ace of Spades’, and a good old version of Britney’s ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’. The cool cocktails on offer went down a treat and loosened people’s vocal chords enough to really let out their inner superstar, but the only things dodgier than some of the Eminem impressions were the sparkly cowboy hats and colourful wigs that were donned to get into the groove!

When Qypers fancied a break from dodgy renditions of Bon Jovi songs, the Windows Phone team were on hand to show off upcoming Windows Phone 7 features and give hands-on demos of the latest Windows Phone, the HTC HD2.

The night was a corker. And the best bit is to come – we are going to give one our guests from last night the HTC Mini phone which was on show. What you need to do is post a link to your write-up, a photo, some video or anything you have from the evening. At 5pm today, we will pick one of the comments at random and they will win the phone. Full terms and conditions are here.

Get commenting, and good luck! Look out on the Qypers Love Events forum for details of the next ‘my kind of phone’ event!

As you can see from the picture above, I lose control whenever Bon Jovi is involved. The only thing dodgier than my vocals on “You Give Love a Bad Name” was my version of “All the Single Ladies” with the video’s dance and all.

The props were hilarious. Really good if you want to disguise yourself from prying eyes (and video cameras, having had two of my performances at previous karaoke sessions recorded without my knowledge). I’m really glad I managed to get away without having to do any Britney!

I had never realised how difficult ‘Push it’ was to sing! Luckily ‘Bad Romance’ came along to cheer myself up though we really needed more microphones. I spent some time playing air guitar until someone handed me a real blow-up guitar! Later I found out that we could have also had a tambourine if we wished.
The cocktails were amazing… long, fruity and I’m sure my first one contained sake. All over a great event, only now I have to contend with dodgy photo’s of me singing my heart out on Flickr..

Thanks for a very special evening of fun, I felt a little ‘chewy’ this morning when I woke up with a microphone in my pocket and wig on my head – surely the sign of a great night. If only I had a mobile telecommunication device to capture audio, shoot some film, snap some paps and allow me to tweet my reactions to my fellow singers during the night – an essential life aid to capture life as it happens, instead of gin soaked memories!

Still recovering from last night… So excited about Babe one more time, Total eclipse of the heart and Salt n Pepa Push It, that I completely forgot to take a few pics. Great event!

Always had a dodgy idea of karaoke, but then I had never been to a private booth bar like Lucky Voice. All I can say (difficult at moment, seem to have lost my voice) was this was a great experience.

Thank you to all my new friends who I shared the mike with … now I know what it is like to be in Glee! Oh oh ohhhh!

Okay. I’ll play. TOO MUCH FUN! And my voice is still not back to 100% yet.
Favourite moment: “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room”

Fave song I sang: “Ace of Spades” duet with Eamon

Big thanks to My Kind of Phone for sponsoring and to Lucky Voice for the hospitality!!

Yay!
