How to use One Note on Windows Phone 7

Posted February 21, 2011

Office

Possibly the most used app in the Office Hub, One Note is the first app shown and very often the best to suit your needs. One Note allows for quick note taking (a doddle with the excellent on screen keyboard that makes it really difficult to create an autocorrect fail) with some pretty advanced features that are so easy to use.

Any Windows Phone 7 owner not using the app should really take a look at what it can do, and start using it to take notes with in meetings! Just make sure you tell your boss you are actually doing work, and not playing ilomilo ;)

The Basics

Open the Office Hub and you will be taken directly to One Note. To begin a new note, just click the + symbol. Give your note a title and then begin tapping away! Once you are done taking note, just click the back button and it will be saved automatically.

So you want to do more?

If simple words are not enough to feed your hunger, then why not try a bit of formatting! Most meetings notes are best put into a list, so do this by tapping the button on the bottom left and a number one will appear, type your item and press enter – by golly, a number 2 appears! When done with your listing activities just tap enter twice and the next number will appear and then just as quickly go away, probably a little upset it didn’t make the cut.

Not keen on numbers? Okay, well use a classic bullet point by clicking the *** button (options) and choosing bulleted list – and whilst you are here you can mess about with the indent, should you be passionate about alignment and all that :)

Not enough?

Right-o, that’s fine, here are more tips:

Highlight a moment – did your boss say something extra nice, or extra important? Turn it yellow to make that phrase stand out! Click the *** button and choose format, choose highlight and type away, when you are done with the highlighted section just go back and click it again to turn it off.

Be bold – need to highlight something that extra bit, make it bold.. or underline it.. or make it wonky.. or do all of it and then whack a line right through the middle too! Head back over to the formatting section and all those options are right there (I’ve since been informed it is actually italics, not wonky text and strike-through not just whacking a line through it – who’d have known?!)

Interesting graph? Boss just fell of the chair? Capture the moment! If you want something visual, then take a photo and place it in your note. Just tap the + in a Polaroid symbol to add an existing photo, or take a new one.

Link it up – Add in a hyperlink by typing out the web address. After the ‘www.’ One Note will realise your game and make it visible that it’s a link – a clickable link too that can be opened straight from the app. Good times.

Are you just too plain lazy?

Can’t be bothered to type out notes? Just record the whole thing by tapping the microphone button. It will instantly begin recording and only stop when you click the button that weirdly enough says ‘stop’. Play it back by clicking the little speaker symbol that appears in your note. Oh and if you are taking notes, but want to record a little bit, don’t worry, you can type, record, type some more and mix it up like DJ Yoda!

All done? Click back to come out of edit mode, where you can choose to pin it to the start menu or share to others, once you’ve done this (if you need to that is) then click back again and it will save on its own. Comment if you have anymore tips!
