Introducing ‘my kind of competition: groove’

Note: The entry period has now closed

Get ready to create the soundtrack of your life. Win an unforgettable weekend in Ibiza for you and 3 friends* just by sharing your ultimate mobile playlist with us. Whether you want to go to Ibiza to rock out, dance all night or just chill with your headphones in, you make the choices to create a music-filled Summer weekend that you’ll never forget.

Indulge your love of music with  a competition of three parts. The first part of ‘my kind of competition’ is ‘#groove’ – a competition to find the ultimate mobile playlist as chosen by you. The winner and 3 friends will be treated to a weekend Ibiza experience to die for, including return flights, a private apartment with pool, a supply of food and drink…and a Windows Phone to capture the memorable moments. And this Ibiza music experience comes complete with your very own driver to take you to the best beaches, restaurants, bars and clubs on the island! The island has a huge range of music, from dance to indie to R&B and pop, so relax by the pool by day and dance or chill by night to your favourite tunes. It’s YOUR weekend in the sun!

Enter now

Just tell us which 7 songs you would put on your ultimate mobile playlist. The seven songs you couldn’t live without. The 7 songs that you listen to in the morning or end of the day. The ones you love to hear when you’re out and about. That make you smile and dance when you’re with your friends. You get to choose, just make sure they’re personal to you and tell us about it in your submission. (You’ll also need to come up with a clever name for your playlist to help seal the deal.)

Here’s how

  1. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with the competition;
  2. Share your playlist by leaving a comment below. The comment should contain your 7 track playlist, playlist name and upto 50 words to explain your entry; and
  3. After completing 1 and 2 click the ‘Tweet to complete’ button below (log-in required), add your playlist name to the pre-populated tweet and share this tweet with your friends (tweet popularity will help you get into the finals, so don’t forget this step).

Note: We’ve removed the ‘Tweet to complete’ button because the comp is now closed.

What happens next?

On the 28th May our judges will pick their 10 favourites based on creativity, originality and popularity of your list on Twitter – so get ready to persuade us that your ultimate mobile playlist is THE ultimate playlist and you could be in with a chance to win. The top 10 will then be put to a public vote on Facebook from 2pm 28th May-2nd June, so you’ll need your friends, family and the community to support you if you make it through. One lucky winner will walk away with an incredible weekend in Ibiza, but we hope everyone will have fun and be inspired, because we’ll be showcasing the best of the entries as we go. That’s it, time to get your #groove on.

And some more good news… the entry deadline has been extended by 1 day, so get your entries in by midnight at the end of Thursday the 27th May to be in with a chance.

“The greatest festival day out you could possibly wish for . . .“

Jurassic 5 – Great Expectations
Divinyls – I Touch Myself
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill
New Order – The Perfect Kiss
Coldplay – Everything’s Not Lost
Underworld – Born Slippy
Blur – To The End

My ideal festival day journey though seven songs; J5 for afternoon cool, Divinyls as the ultimate guilty pleasure, evening drinking to some classics like the Bush, evening dancing like it’s the Hacienda, mass love-in sing-a-long at main stage, 4am raving, to the tent with a festival stranger. That is all.

Playlist name – aged 28- honestly!

High School Musical – ‘Breaking Free’
Alphabeat – ‘The Spell’
Hanson – ‘Where’s the Love’
Take that – Could it be Magic?
Liberty X – “Song for Lovers”
Salt n Pepa – ‘Whatta Man’
Mike and the Mechanics – ‘Over my Shoulder’

My music tastes have been described as the worst for ‘anyone over the age of 11′, but I’m not ashamed to admit that listening to the High School Musical sound track on the way to work genuinely uplifts me OR that I cried when I was in NY a couple of months ago and realised I missed Hanson’s concert by one day (still crying a bit now). These are the songs that bring me to life and that’s all that matters.

• Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve
• Teardrop – Massive Attack
• Heartbeats – Josè Gonzalez

Truly great music is so much more than notes and harmonies; it rejoices memories passed and frames the wondrous times we have to look forward to. It lets us relive those precious moments for just a couple of minutes; the gigs, the festivals, the loves, the laughs and just living life.. These are my songs, and they always leave me with a smile :)

It Seems I Like Growly Voices…

The Hunger – The Distillers
Skinny Love – Bon Iver
Born To Run – Bruce Springsteen
The Frug – Rilo Kiley
Sweet Little Thing – Lucero

Not sure how to describe my choices in 50 words. They all mean a lot to me for various reasons and they’re all amazing songs. They sound great in the sunshine and in happy wintery moments. These songs evoke all the right sorts of feelings and I love them muchly.

The Stone Roses – Waterfall

The Doors – The End
Daft Punk – Aerodynamic

Interpol – Untitled
Daft Punk – Da Funk
Can – Mushroom
Television – Marquee Moon
Pixies – Motorway to Roswell
Queens of the Stone Age – Go With the Flow
Outkast – Hey Ya!

An aural journey that starts with tingling anticipation, rises to walking-pace defining rhythms and warping syncopation in the middle, then rocking out and hitting the dancefloor at the end. These are my going out tracks for when I’m definitely heading somewhere special.

THESE BEATS WILL MOVE YOUR FEET

I feel just like a child – Devendra Banhart
It’s only Rock N’ Roll – The Rolling Stones
Move on up – Curtis Mayfield
Roadhouse blues – The Doors
Remedy – The Black Crowes
Dog days are over – Florence+the Machine
Baba O’Reilly – The Who

From the groovin’ unassuming opening of Devendra’s ‘feel just like a child’ to the uplifting ‘Remedy’ and on to the euphoric ‘Dog Days Are Over’ by Florence and finished off by the climactic ‘Baba O’Reilly’ , these songs are guaranteed to get you moving your feet while feeling happy inside!

Stir It Up – Bob Marley
With a Little Help From My Friends – Joe Cocker
Merry Blues – Manu Chao
When Doves Cry – Prince
Scar Tissue – Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Call Me Al – Paul Simon
Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

Ok, so they’re not my favourite songs in the world, but these songs are all unifiers in a sea of musical difference. Festivals are about bringing people together and celebrating the commonalities between us. These songs never fail to unite people, and for that reason, I couldn’t live without them.

Easy Lover – Phil Collins
One Way or Another – Blondie
Teardrop – Massive Attack
Here Comes Your Man – Pixies
Hotel California – The Eagles
Losing My Religion – REM
Is This Love – Bob Marley

These are the songs that come on mid-conversation, and have the power to turn that conversation into a conversation about the song. That’s the beauty of music!

REPEAT

Hand in Glove – The Smiths
Climbing up the walls – Radiohead
Hey – The Pixies
The Asphalt World – Suede
Venus as a boy – Bjork
Everybody loves the sunshine – Roy Ayers
Three of a perfect pair – King Crimson

I may seem slightly angst ridden (or sinister!) from this list but musically and lyrically these songs are seriously powerful and enjoyable to listen to, they make me feel nostalgic, emotional, happy and sad. They remind me why music is the best thing to indulge in, whatever your emotion.

Eclectic…tick…tick…BOOM!

St Germain – Rose Rouge
Neil Young – Heart of Gold
James – Say Something
The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
The Smiths – This Charming Man
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends
Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream

If I could say something about this playlist, I would say its for all tastes and dispositions. All my friends would agree that the sound develops from the chill out beats of St Germain and includes classics such as Neil Youngs heart of gold. Timeless. The Smiths sound as modern now as they did in the 80s. As LCD soundsystem kicks in you realise that they epitomize music of the last decade – you cannot avoid losing yourself in the beat. The playlist of course leaves you with the feel good beat of Empire of the Sun’s Walking on a dream. There are not many songs which epitomise summer as much as this. It may be an ecclectic mix but its a clash made in heaven.

Before every holiday, I’ll prep a playlist to listen to in the weeks before I leave. Nine times out of ten, I’ll do that on my mobile.

Walking through the streets with some summer beats ringing through my ears (unintended rhyme) is enough to brighten up even the greyest of days, as I get lost and I’m already on a beach with the sun on my skin. Perfect.

The thing about a mobile playlist,
that makes it quite perverse,
is that unique ability to describe your universe,
some songs remind of good times,
some of feelings gone cold,
and one will make you realise,
you really are quite old :)

I’m turning 30 soon, and so I need to smile, give me a nice word My Kind of Phone, about that nice White Isle.

Gorillaz – Client Eastwood
Blink-182 – All The Small Things (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1tAYmMjLdY)
Electric Six – Gay Bar
The Kooks – Naive
We Are Scientists – Let’s See It
Vampire Weekend – A-Punk
Phoenix – 1901

So my list is a bunch of stuff from different parts of my life. I used to listening to the Gorillaz my 2nd year into secondary school back then I actually thought Gorillaz was for real. Blink-182 during the middle of school. Electric Six’s gay bar song for added hilarity for singing during break times. The Kooks because my best friend’s girl friend got the mumps and I got to go to the gig. We Are Scientists because I saw them when I was in six form. Vampire Weekend just reminds me of university. And Phoenix as that’s all I listened to when I was in California for a few months walking down the sunny streets wearing $2 Urban Outfitters sun glasses last year.
